Sule Skerry Gin is a bold New Western-style gin, inspired by the wild beauty of Sule Skerry, which is the westernmost point of Orkney. The label, designed in-house by founder Gary and his daughter Erin, captures Orkney’s iconic sunrises, sunsets, and the remote Sule Skerry Lighthouse. Crafted with botanicals like orange zest, nutmeg, cardamom, and cinnamon, this gin offers a citrus-forward flavour with a gently caramelised finish.

Tasting Notes

Flavours

  • Citrus
  • Spiced
  • Piney
  • Sweet
  • Nose

Bright citrus peel (especially orange) greets initially, with a fresh burst of zest. Underneath is a warming spiciness — cardamom, a hint of nutmeg, and cinnamon bark. The juniper sits underneath but is not dominating in a heavy pine fashion; instead it offers a clean base. A faint whisper of vanilla or caramel suggestion emerges, giving a soft vanilla-sweetness without being overtly sweet.

    Taste

The citrus (orange zest) carries through, with juniper still playing a role, then the spice layer builds: cardamom and nutmeg provide aromatic warmth, cinnamon adds a gentle edge. The vanilla/caramel note turns up a little towards the mid-palate, giving the sense of a “craft cola” nod as the brand mentions. The mouthfeel is described as smooth, with the island distillery’s slow/multiple distillations (or at least emphasised mouthfeel) contributing to a clean texture.

    Finish

The finish is relatively long for a gin of 41.5% — the spice warmth lingers (especially cinnamon and nutmeg), joined by the vanilla/caramel suggestion and a subtle citrus fade. Juniper remains present subtly, so the gin doesn’t stray from its category; but the lasting impression is warm, slightly sweet (in a dry sense), gently spiced. According to the brand: “a gently caramelised finish that evokes nostalgia, while still preserving the traditional juniper-forward flavour."

    How to enjoy this gin

Sule Skerry Gin shines whether enjoyed neat or in cocktails, offering warmth and joy all year round. As a traditional G&T serve, it's best with plain tonic and garnished with citrus and cinnamon sticks for an extra cosy finish.

    About Orkney Gin Company

Gary and Andrea Watt, Orcadians and husband and wife team behind Orkney Gin Company, started making homemade gin as a Christmas gift for family and friends. Realising how much they enjoyed the process and going by the feedback they received from family and friends, The Orkney Gin Company was established, which now includes their daughter Erin. Gary and Andrea knew they wanted to create something truly original but with a sense of heritage and connection to the surrounding land. They opted for the cold-compounding method to create their gins, infusing the botanicals in a labour-intensive bathtub method to impart the unique aroma and flavours found in their award-winning gins.

    Production

After years of cold compounding gin at home, Gary and Andrea Watt, together with their daughter Erin, recently put the finishing touches on their modern purpose-built distillery next to their family home, which allows them to not only meet demand for their popular Orcadian 'Bathtub' gins but all also experiment and produce new flavours and styles including distilled spirits.
