Avva means a respected grandmother, a respected mother, or an old or respectable woman in the Indian language of Dravidian. In Hebrew it means to overturn or ruin, which links the reputation gin had as ‘Mother’s Ruin’ from the Hogarth era. The brand's signature Avva Scottish Gin is an exclusive combination of eleven local, native and traditional botanicals, including five which are locally sourced – rowan, red clover, mint, dandelion and nettle.

Punchy juniper, more prominent than the signature gin but still with notes of citrus to taste.

    How to enjoy this gin

Like any good high strength gin, it is recommended you sip this gin neat initially to appreciate all its complexities. For a more traditional serve, add a splash of tonic and a twist of orange peel.

    About Avva Scottish Gin

Moray Distillery, established in 2016, can be found in the heart of the old Cathedral city of Elgin in the world famous Speyside area of the Scottish Highlands. Steeped in history and tradition, this part of Scotland is known to many as the whisky distillery heartland of the world. Founder and distiller Jill Brown is responsible for all areas of production, including distilling, filling, and hand numbering and signing of all bottles on site.

    Production

Moray Distillery is based in Elgin and has undergone a number of improvements over the years, including opening to tours and tastings. The bespoke still at Moray Distillery was made in Elgin by local copper specialists Speyside Copper Works and is named after the founder's grandmothers Jessie Sutherland Brown and Jean Bannerman Waters, affectionately know as Jessie Jean (or J-J).
